FOLA Sponsors Healthcare Forum on Act 48 Oct. 20

Composite pix of panelist

With the mounting discussions concerning Act 48, the legislation aimed at creating a statewide healthcare policy, and the on-going questions as to how such a system might work and cost Vermonters, FOLA (Friends of Ludlow Auditorium) decided it was time for the two major sides to address the pros and cons of the issue before an area audience.

As a result, FOLA has created a panel of six statewide leaders in the healthcare Stewart Ledbetter photo field debate to discuss the meaning and impact of Act 48 on Thursday, October 20 at 7 PM at the Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium.  To ensure that the panel discussion addresses all the key questions concerning this issue, FOLA asked Stewart Ledbetter, Senior Political  Reporter for WPTZ/WNNE, to moderate the panel discussion.

The panel will consist of, top row, left to right, Steve Kappel, Dr. Deb Richter, Wendy Wilton; bottom row, left to right, State Senate President John Campbell, Bob Gaydos, and Darcie Johnston.

The forum will begin with an introduction of the panel and moderator, followed by a brief PowerPoint presentation outlining the major elements of the Act 48 legislation.  Following this, the moderator will ask the panel members to respond to his questions.  The audience will then have the opportunity to ask the panel questions about both Act 48 and its impact.  For additional information, call 802-228-7239.

PARROTHEADS FLOCK TO OKEMO OCTOBER 8

Submitted by Okemo Mtn Resort

Okemo Mountain Resort celebrates the changing of the seasons on Saturday, Oct. 8, with its fifth annual Parrothead Party. Island breezes will blow as the band Changes in Latitudes takes to the outdoor stage for a free concert at Okemo’s Jackson Gore Inn.  This popular Jimmy Buffett tribute band takes partygoers on a journey filled with good clean fun to – where else? – Margaritaville.  Every musical set is a party with beach balls, conga lines and leis galore.

The party will start at noon with the music of Dave Maguire. Changes in Latitudes will go on at 2 p.m. Okemo’s Coleman Brook Tavern staff will be rendering some frozen concoctions and cooking up some cheeseburgers in paradise for concertgoers. They’ll even help find that lost shaker of salt, plus beer, wine, soft drinks and barbecue items fresh from the grill. Free hay rides will be offered from noon to 4 p.m. and a farmers’ market will feature local produce and assorted goodies.

The fun continues on Sunday, Oct. 9, with a Vermont Institute of Natural Science Raptor Encounter, a free family presentation from 10 to 11 a.m. at Jackson Gore. From 11 to noon, kids can get up close and personal with some heavy equipment during Touch-a-Truck. Starting at noon, an all-American apple pie baking contest is open to all home bakers who would like to submit a delicious entry. Email sebbott@okemo.com for information and an entry form.

In addition to all the Parrothead Party festivities, Columbus Day weekend marks the deadline for early season discounts on the purchase of ski and snowboard season passes at Okemo Mountain Resort. Ski and snowboard season begins November 19 and starting on Oct. 11, all of Okemo’s season pass products go to full price. Season passes are a great way to save money on lift tickets and avoid ticket lines. Okemo offers direct-to-lift seven-day passes, five-day passes, midweek passes and even a Sunday One-Day Pass. Some passes include skiing and riding benefits with Okemo’s sister resorts, Mount Sunapee, N.H., and Crested Butte Mountain Resort, Colo. Okemo’s partnership continues, this winter, with Stratton Mountain, Vt., as well.

WEINSTEIN DOES IT AGAIN! SECOND ACE AT OVGC

Submitted by Okemo Mtn Resort

Kenny Weinstein, an Okemo Valley Golf Club member from Long Beach, N.Y., made his second hole-in-one of the season at OVGC on Sept. 21. Weinstein aced Number 17 from the green tee, 146 yards away from the pin. Jim Donnelly witnessed the amazing feat. Earlier this summer, on Aug. 27, Weinstein made a hole-in-one on the fourth hole. He is the second member in OVGC’s history to score two aces in a single season.  Blaise Berthiaume made two holes-in-one last summer on the 8th and 17th holes.

Weinstein will have his name engraved, for a second time, on a hole-in-one plaque that hangs inside the Okemo Valley Golf Club clubhouse, to honor the fortunate few who have had the exhilarating experience of making a hole-in-one at OVGC.
